Smudging; meaning

Smudging has been done by natives for a long time. Cave dwellers probably did it thousands of years ago. By smudging we mean “energetic cleaning” by burning certain herbs. The Indians called this “the expelling of evil spirits.” Today, chasing away evil spirits is also referred to as expelling negative energy.

Burn white sage

A smudging ceremony with white sage is usually performed prior to another ritual. For example, many people do smudging before meditating. After all, meditation works best in a pleasant space! At the same time, white sage helps with meditation itself: it helps you to contact your subconscious mind. This is what the Native Americans called the “spirit world.”

Smudging ceremony; How do you proceed?

How you perform a smudging ritual is personal. There is, however, a basis for holding the ceremony. You proceed as follows:

  • Place the smudge stick in a fireproof dish or shell, possibly with some sand.
  • Take a match or lighter and light the herbs. Wait until you see a flame.
  • Blow out the flame and let the herbs smolder.
  • If necessary, spread the smoke with a feather, such as a swan feather.
